Why Try Pilates?

Pilates (PI-LAH-TEEZ) is a form of body conditioning that focuses on strengthening and lengthening the muscles without putting pressure on the joints nor stress on the body.  The Pilates method is very unique and there is no other kind of strength training quite like it.  This work strengthens the body from the inside out by waking up & developing the intrinsic muscles so that one can move with ease & from a place of balance.  Such muscles include: the transverse abdominis, piriformis, gluteus medius, rotator cuff muscles, multifidi, quadratus lumborum, and the pelvic floor.

The Pilates method also brings the body back into alignment not only by strengthening the intrinsic muscles, but also through flexibility, lengthening of the spine, and joint mobility.   In addition, myofascial release can be used to release muscles that are locked short, which can then be strengthened properly. Without flexibility, it is very difficult to build true strength without succumbing oneself to injury.  Long muscle fibers will take to strength training much more quickly than shortened muscle fibers.

Benefits of Pilates include:

  • Promotes long & lean muscle tone
  • Strengthens the core & intrinsic muscles of the body, which are often weak. These include the Psoas, Pirifomis, Gluteus Medius/Minimus, Pelvic Floor, Transverse Abdominus, Quadratus Lumborum, Multifidi, & Stabilizing muscles
  • Increases muscle flexibility & joint mobility
  • Lengthens the spine & improves posture
  • Relieves discomfort or pain from incorrect alignment/postural issues.  Particularly back & neck pain
  • Enhances the mind-body connection and body awareness.
  • Improves coordination & balance
  • Enhances other sports & physical activities including golf, swimming, baseball, dance, running, to name a few
  • Increases energy, physical/mental endurance.  Reduces stress. Exercise is great for your brain and mood!
  • Quickens recovery from physical injuries &/or illness.  Great to do after initial physical therapy to continue the healing process

Movement is healing.  This work allows one to connect to one's body in such a way that allows the body to heal itself; for its natural state is of health.  When given the correct tools, awareness, & cues, the body will naturally revert back to this.
